Kara Isaac. All Made Up. Bellbird Press, 2018.
Ms. Isaac recently won a RITA award for her last self-published novel, Then There Was You. After reading and reviewing it last year, I firmly believe that it remains one of my favorite releases of 2017. With Ms. Isaac’s latest self-published book, I put in the extra effort to pre-order a printed copy, because I knew that it would be well worth reading and placing on my favorites shelf.
Kat McLeod finally receives her own novel in Ms. Isaac’s newest self-published novel, All Made Up. To pay back her dues to one of her professional friends, she agrees to take a cut from her normal rate as a lead make-up artist for major films to help out with a Australian reality show. When some of the normal cast turn up sick, Kat finds herself as a stand-in on Falling for the Farmer, a Bachelor-style show with her ex-boyfriend, Caleb, as the unsuspecting leading man. Caleb and Kat haven’t seen each other in nearly a decade, but their chemistry makes for great television, even if their acting ability ends there. With the network and producers threatening legal consequences if they don’t meet expectations, Caleb and Kat find that they must trust each other, even as they discover that their love story never ended with their initial breakup.
In All Made Up, Ms. Isaac finally brings the full story of one of her most legendary secondary characters to her readers. Kat and Caleb make an engaging and hysterical duo, in spite of their reality TV show flubs.
Overall, I absolutely loved reading All Made Up! Ms. Isaac’s writing style and characters make for hilarious and fun-filled reading, even as she enriches her story with real-life problems along the way. Readers who have been eager to learn more about Kat’s character will feel that their wait has been well worthwhile after reading this story. In addition to her tale, Ms. Isaac also brings back several other characters from her books, making the story fit well within the world of her other novels. Readers who have not previously read Ms. Isaac’s other works will still be able to read All Made Up, but I would not be surprised if they eagerly seek out her other books as soon as possible afterwards.
Fans of Ms. Isaac’s work, especially Then There Was You, will find All Made Up well worth reading. In addition, those who enjoy Christian romantic comedy stories will also definitely want to try Ms. Isaac’s books.
Ms. Isaac will be releasing her next book, One Thing I Know, in February 2019!
