Karen Witemeyer. More Than Meets the Eye. Minneapolis, MN: Bethany House Publishers, 2018.
After some unanticipated delays, I am absolutely thrilled to finally share this week’s book. Ms. Witemeyer’s novels are always one of the highlights of the year and this new release is no exception!
In More Than Meets the Eye, Evangeline Hamilton has overcome childhood tragedy, while taking on a joyful attitude toward life. Having formed a patchwork family with two other orphans, Evie finds love and acceptance, even as townsfolk find her mismatched eyes to be worth avoiding at all costs. When Logan Fowler arrives in Pecan Gap and becomes the Hamilton family’s new neighbor, he takes the time to see beyond Evie’s unusual eyes to the joy-filled soul underneath. Unfortunately, Evie’s positive influence frustrates Logan’s true purpose for meeting the Hamiltons, namely to seek justice from Evie’s eldest brother and his criminal past. With new-found friendships and neighbors, the Hamiltons may never be the same, as they take a chance on the lives they were meant to live all along.
Ms. Witemeyer tells a heart-felt story of lost legacies and second chances, while creating a new cast of characters that readers will love. The Hamilton siblings and their patchwork family will be a fan favorite and an impressive beginning to Ms. Witemeyer’s Patchwork Family series.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading More Than Meets the Eye! Ms. Witemeyer consistently makes my list of the year’s top authors, as her stories combine fascinating historical aspects, unique characters, and humorous storytelling. More Than Meets the Eye is somewhat different from some of her past novels, even as it shares similarities with the novels in her Archer Brothers series, as she builds on the stories of unique family situations. Evie, Seth, and Zach show themselves to be a close-knit family throughout the novel, illustrating their growth and changing relationship as they each take on their adulthood roles and responsibilities. After reading More Than Meets the Eye, I am eagerly anticipating future stories in this series, as Ms. Witemeyer leaves open that possibility at the end of this story.
Fans of Ms. Witemeyer’s previous novels will definitely want to read More Than Meets the Eye. Additionally, readers who particularly enjoy Christian historical fiction with a lighter tone will also find this novel to be well worth adding to their must-read piles.
Special thanks to Bethany House Publishers for the complimentary copy of More Than Meets the Eye! Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
